To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, Sept. 15, PA Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro’s campaign released its second ad targeting the Commonwealth’s Latino community ahead of November’s general election.

“Oportunidad” (“Opportunity”) is its title, and the 15-second, digital bilingual English-Spanish ad is quick hitter of some of Shapiro’s goals for office and highlights his efforts as Attorney General to combat both the drug trade and illegal arms trafficking.

In terms of goals, the ad specifically highlights lowering costs, funding schools, and keeping children safe.

On his efforts to combat the drug trade and illegal arms trafficking, Shapiro’s office launched an initiative back in 2020 that involved both state and local Philadelphia authorities to combat the drug trade in the city’s Kensington neighborhood. His office has since announced the dismantling of a number of drug rings.

When it comes to guns, Shapiro’s office has of late, specifically targeted the manufacture and distribution of ghost guns in the state. Their use has seen a significant rise, especially amid the uptick of gun violence in Philadelphia over the last two-and-a-half years.

“Oportunidad” is the Shapiro campaign’s second ad targeting the state’s Latino community ahead of the November general election. The first was titled “Nuestras Peleas,” and was a one-minute radio ad in Spanish that talked through two of Shapiro’s biggest fights as Attorney General.

The first was a fight against the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and Highmark Health Insurance, that ended with the center and insurance company signing a 10-year deal to keep people insured amid the split of both entities. The second was the aforementioned Kensington initiative.

The new ad for Hispanic Heritage Month is also now the fourth overall to be dropped targeting Pennsylvania’s Latino community among the candidates running for either governor or U.S. Senate. A week ago, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate John Fetterman dropped his second Spanish-language radio ad of the campaign, titled “Cumplirá,” featuring Second Lady of PA Gisele Fetterman (also for the second time) talking about her husband’s ‘lealtad’ (loyalty) to the state’s Latino community.

On Republican side of both major races, Gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano and Senate candidate Mehmet Oz have yet to release any Spanish-language ads or made attempted outreach to the state’s Latino community.
