From Monday on, the world’s main global leaders will gather in New York for the U.N. General Assembly. At the meeting, 126 chiefs of state are expected to discuss key issues like climate change, the Iran nuclear deal, human right atrocities in Myanmar and North Korea’s nuclear program.  

Many of the leaders will be scrutinizing US President Donald Trump, who is set to deliver his first centerpiece speech at the U.N on Thursday.

For Nikki Haley, the American envoy, the week will be a test of how much influence she has among her peers and on President Trump, as reported in The New York Times.

During his electoral campaign before taking office, Trump harshly criticized the United Nations, and has been defending a series of reforms in the organization that will be debated at a summit to be held this Monday.

According to The NY Times, President Trump will be scrutinized first about his America First approach — which has led him to pull out of international agreements on free trade and climate change.

Last June, President Trump announced the withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement,  leaving the US with only Syria and Nicaragua to join the countries outside the global agreement against global warming.

However, Secretary of state Rex Tillerson and national security adviser HR McMaster on Sunday signalled that the US could soft its position towards the Paris climate accord and it’s “open to negotiation” about issues related to global warming, amid signs that the issue will be discussed at the U.N general assembly in New York this week, as reported in The Guardian.

On Monday, Trump will meet with the leaders of France and Israel. Afterwards, he will host a dinner with Latin American leaders.
