As protests become an increasingly common practice in the city of Philadelphia, the line of what behavior is permissible needs to be increasingly defined. And yesterday, according to Philadelphia Magazine, a federal judge did just that.

In a suit against six protesters, a federal judge named them guilty of trespassing an eight-foot security fence at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

Arrested on June 27th, on the corner of Broad St and Pattison Avenue in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, the protesters used a bolt cutter to open a fence.

The person who cut the fence, 29-year-old Travis Martin from Houston, Texas, may be facing heavier charges for his action on his own in late September where his sentincing will be decided. A federal judge has found six protesters guilty of trespassing an eight-foot security fence at the Democratic National Convention last summer.

The crossing started at 10:45 p.m. on the third day of the DNC, on the night that former president Barack Obama spoke at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Philadelphia Inqurer reported that five of the defendants, 19-year-old Dan Nguyen of Maryland; 24-year-old Jacob Van Buskirk of Washington; 25-year-old Lincoln Bohn of California; 27-year-old Natalie Frazer of Washington; and 28-year-old Megan Munk of Washington - were fined $500.

Though City Council passed a law stating that nuisance violations should be decriminalized, an argument posed by the defense attorneys in the case, Senior U.S. District Judge Michael J. Baylson stated that the protesters cross the line with their use of the bolt cutter.
