Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reaffirmed his country’s sovereignty and independence in response to recent immigration proposals discussed in the United States. In a speech, López Obrador emphasized that Mexico is not a colony of any foreign power, firmly rejecting the ideas of militarizing the border and mistreating migrants, which are associated with former President Donald Trump’s policies.
López Obrador also questioned the proposals from the Democratic Party, represented by Kamala Harris, which suggest regulating migration through visas and asylum programs. Although these approaches differ from Trump’s, the Mexican president made it clear that Mexico will not yield to any policies that compromise its sovereignty or harm its citizens.

Additionally, López Obrador highlighted the importance of remittances sent by migrants, which constitute one of Mexico’s main sources of foreign income, amounting to nearly $65 billion annually. Meanwhile, former President Trump, in a message to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Mexico City, reiterated his commitment to protecting borders and maintaining security in the region, reaffirming his strict immigration control stance.
Despite political differences, López Obrador reaffirmed that Mexico will maintain its independent stance and will not allow foreign decisions to affect national sovereignty.
