Many people feel that their lives are empty, incomplete, or unsatisfying. Nothing seems to fill them. They shop frantically and feel a temporary relief, but then the feeling of loneliness returns, and they wonder if anything is worth it.
It's also common to find people who work hard and, at the end of the day, ask themselves, "Why am I doing all this for? Is it worth it?" These questions are ancient. Even in the famous text of the Bible, Ecclesiastes, the Preacher questioned himself and wrote: "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. What profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? One generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever."
However, we can always find a new meaning in life, which can also change depending on the circumstances we find ourselves in. But if you feel that your life is empty or lacking meaning right now, here are some recommendations.
Recommended practices if you feel your life is empty
If you feel empty in your life, you should prioritize these areas:
• Explore your passions: exploring your passions, interests, and values can be an effective way to find a sense of purpose in your life. Try practicing activities like self-exploration, identifying personal goals and dreams, and identifying activities that bring you joy.
• Self-care: you must take care of yourself. Setting the goal of personal growth can also help you to feel more complete and satisfied in life. You can set achievable short-term goals, learn new skills and connect with new people. All of this is part of physical and mental care.
• Work on spirituality: this doesn't necessarily mean religiosity, although if you feel comfortable visiting a religious center, that's fine. But finding a source of spirituality can bring meaning to your life. It doesn't even matter if you struggle to believe certain doctrines or popular beliefs. The goal is to recognize what you feel you were born for, what you connect with the most, and what unfolds a deep purpose in you.
• Change your perspective: you can achieve this through gratitude. If you find it difficult, you can try it for a couple of days and see all the blessings that, despite adversity, you have in your life, like being able to breathe, walk, feel the textures offered by nature, find joy in the scent of your favorite coffee, among others. You will see that if you read something you like, you will be able to find reasons to feel gratitude. Gratitude is essential to experience a complete life, recognizing everything you have. If you look closely, you will notice that you have precious things that cannot even be bought with money. This does not mean that you should compare yourself to other people but that you see all the positive things in you.
Through the cracks in your soul, there is path for light to enter. This applies especially if you have gone through painful situations or if you feel you have emotional wounds. If you pay attention, you will realize that the most valuable things in life are intangible, those that cannot be bought, such as sincere affection from a person, connection with others, love, personal fulfillment, well-being, feeling good emotionally, and especially having the ability to find meaning and joy in everyday experiences.
Keep in mind that nothing happens by accident, that there is a hidden force in the world that is responsible for moving everything, and that it is your individual actions that lead you to flow with life. As Marie Curie said, "The best life is not the longest, but the richest in good actions."
