The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals ruled on Friday, June 13 that prohibiting consensual homosexual intercourse is unconstitutional. The court unanimously overturned the anti-sodomy law, which defines gay sex as a crime. The ruling was made in the case of Dewayne Williams vs. State of Alabama in 2010, when Williams was convicted of sexual misconduct and sentenced to a year in prison because he had sex with another man. 

Ben Cooper from Equality Forum gave an official statement applauding the ruling.

"Each and every person, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity, is entitled to equal protection under the law. The Alabama court's unanimous decision overturning the statute is a step in the right direction and makes us optimistic for future and ongoing equal rights issues."

According to the Huffington Post, about a dozen states still have anti-sodomy laws including Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah.
