A gunman shot and killed a student at the Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Portland early Tuesday morning.
The school was on lockdown and about 100 law enforcement officers with 19 medical personnel were on the scene. Authorities confirmed the alleged shooter, who was a student at the school, died from a self-inflicted gun wound according to WVCB Boston.
One student told a parent the shooting took place in the school's gymnasium but police have yet to confirmed specific details.
"This is a very tragic day, one that I hoped would never ever be apart of my experience," said Linda Florence, Reynolds School District Superintendent.
Gunshots were fired at the school around 8 a.m. and SWAT officers quickly responded and searched the school as students evacuated. Todd Rispler, the school's track coach said he was grazed by a bullet but not seriously injured.
Morgan Rose, 15-year-old freshman, told USA Today she hunkered down in a locker room with another student and two teachers. "It was a scary in the moment, Now knowing everything's OK, I'm better," she said.
The school district's website released a statement expressing gratitude for the swift response by law enforcement.
"Although law enforcement is still completing its investigation, The Reynolds School District wants to express gratitude for the multiple agencies who have responded so quickly and thoroughly to assist with this terrible situation. Without the quick and well-executed response, this tragedy could have been much worse."
