Last week, Brazilian pop star Anitta became the first Brazilian artist to lead the daily ranking of listeners on Spotify. With her hit “Envolver,” sang in Spanish with the intention of expanding her fan base throughout the American continent, she positioned herself at the top of the “daily global chart” of the popular streaming platform.

After a successful marketing campaign starring the singer and other Brazilian celebrities, “Envolver” reached 6.4 million listens last Friday alone. Since its publication, the song has already garnered 71.6 million listeners.

“Number one in the world, I really don't know what to say. A Latin woman who becomes the first soloist to top the world ranking. The only Brazilian in the history of my country to have a top five song in the world. It's amazing,” she celebrated on Twitter after hearing the news.

On the weekly list compiled by Billboard — which includes 200 songs — "Envolver" went from position 82 to 19 in just one week, and became the song to gain the most momentum.

Anitta made profit from the TikTok boom during the pandemic to promote her song in Spanish. In doing a twerk move from her own song, she attracted the attention of hundreds of thousands of followers. Her song follows the classic reggaeton formula: catchy rhythm, lyrics of love and desire, and an explicit music, where the singer and a shirtless dancer dance and wiggle shamelessly.

Anitta's dance on TikTok became so popular that she began to receive a barrage of videos of people imitating her steps, some more funny than others.

With the song “Girl from Río,” the Brazilian singer went viral betting on a softer and more relaxed pop. In a music video where she appears alongside Brazilian women from her city of all ages, skin colors and sizes, she said they all represent the beauty of Rio.

Back then, she explained it was a very personal song: “I talk about everything, about my family, about the place where I come from, about the people I saw and see every day, it is my point of view about women in general and the beauty I see in them.”

Larissa de Macedo Machado, born in Rio de Janeiro, debuted with her single “Meiga e Abusada,” where she quickly gained fame and a contract with the Wagner Music in 2013.

In addition to her own music, Anitta became popular through her collaborations with other urban music stars, such as J Balvin, Maluma and Wisin y Yandel. She also has her own television show, and in 2021, was the Latin artist with more mentions on Twitter along with Bad Bunny.
