Both the Hispanic and the African American Chambers of Commerce stood by Mayor Michael Nutter on Wednesday to show their support for the pro-business initiatives taken on by the city in preparation for September's papal visit.

Amid the apocalyptic planning frenzy over the last several weeks, hundreds of businesses in the areas affected most by the papal visit became frustrated by the lack of answers. Some opted to close rather for that weekend than deal with the logistical uncertainty. Delivery access, transportation for employees, movement restrictions — there were numerous concerns about the strict papal security zone.

In response, the city launched a business resource center hotline, which fielded inquiries from some 250 businesses over the last week. 

Varsovia Fernandez, president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GPHCC), represented one of the small local businesses

"It is truly amazing how quickly the city of Philadelphia came through with this to make sure we receive services as organizations, as Philadelphia businesses, as minority businesses," Fernandez said, adding a special message of "venga a ver Papa Francisco!" (Come see Pope Francis) on behalf of the Latino business community.

Steven S. Bradley, chairman of the African American Chamber of Commerce and a business owner in Center City, said that his organization has been included in the planning process as well.

"We're making sure that this event reflects the demographics of this city," Bradley said. "Our members are aware of the opportunities for vending and welcoming people."
