Playing Tetris on the Cira Building
On Saturday, April 5, was the 30th anniversary of the popular video game Tetris.
To celebrate the occasion, Frank Lee, associate professor of Digital Media at Drexel University, created a version of the game that was played on the 29-story Cira Centre building that features hundreds of LED lights embedded in the outside structure.
Colorful images of the geometric puzzle pieces came falling down as the participants played half a mile away with a super-sized joystick.
"I wanted to use this as an opportunity to bring the people of Philadelphia together," Lee said. "As a game designer, I appreciate Tetris for its simplicity, if I give you the game without any instructions, you will know how to play within 30 seconds."
The event took place at the Oval on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as part of Philly Tech Week's kick-off event, which featured 10 food trucks, local video games, interactive art, and live music.
"It's one of the few games, I always come back to. With some of the more modern games, I'll play once and I'm done with it," Lee said.
Those who participated, were selected through a lottery, which had more than 20 slots available.
