New Jersey's storm of discrimination
Recovering from Hurricane Sandy's devastation two years ago may have been harder for New Jersey's African Americans and Latinos.
The Hurricane Sandy relief program rejected 18 percent of Latino applicants, 35 percent of African Americans applicants and just 13.6 percent of white applicants, Fair Share Housing Center reported this week. One in five Latinos who applied for resettlement were rejected as opposed to one in seven white applicants.
In an interview with Salon, Adam Gordon of Fair Share Housing Center said that the organization is looking into the disparity—and so should the federal government.
"There's really no explanation that we've been able to find that justifies this," Gordon told Salon.
The federal government is currently investigating misuse of Sandy funds that were allegedly funneled into a tourism marketing campaign which prominently featured Governor Chris Christie.
