People on the Move highlights the accomplishments and promotions of employees in our region.
Yasseline Diaz is the corporate relations and events specialist, as well as group lead for Latinos con Propósito. In 2018, she graduated from The Urban League of Philadelphia’s Leadership Forum and was named to the Know Your Value development program. In 2017, Yasseline won the celebrated “Women at the Top” award from AL DÍA for the positive impact she is making in her community.
Veronica Serrano-Herbin recently accepted a position in Creative Services as a copywriter after 13 years with Independence. Veronica also volunteers with the Blue Crew and United Way events committee and helps lead Latinos con Propósito. She was selected to be a part of the Forum of Executive Women Mentoring Program for emerging women leaders in the region.
James Negron is a lead business systems analyst. He has been with Independence and its subsidiaries for more than 30 years. An accomplished trombonist, James recently played at a Hispanic heritage celebration in the Independence courtyard at 1901 Market Street showcasing traditional food, music, and dancing. Each month, James helps prepare dinner at the Ronald McDonald house on Erie Avenue.
Patricia Guerra-Garcia M.D. serves as senior medical director. She was promoted in 2017 and leads the medical directors in the Medical Management and Policy division.
Geralyn Trujillo leads the Office of Public Policy, which offers analysis and strategy to understand and influence legislative and regulatory initiatives impacting Independence and its customers. Throughout her career, her focus centers on the impact of health policy while advocating at the state and federal levels. In October, she participated in Independence’s first Diversity and Inclusion Leadership panel.

Rogelio A. Riley, Jr. is a senior care management assistant. He has been with Independence for 20 years. An active member of the Blue Crew, Rogelio serves as an advisory board member for the volunteer group. In this role, he helps evaluate and select programs and events that will provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for Independence associates.
Veronica Valerio is supervisor of operations for Commercial and Consumer Markets. She has served on the core and steering committee for Independence’s annual United Way campaign. As well, she volunteers with the Blue Crew and has participated in Ronald McDonald House fundraising initiatives.
Evelyn Vasquez-Gerczyk serves as an executive assistant in Operations. She is a founding member of Independence’s Latinos con Propósito. In 2018 she served as a coach for Independence’s Philadelphia Heart Walk team that raised $10,000 for the American Heart Association – bringing her two-year fundraising total to $16,000. A regular volunteer with Jewish Relief Agency, Evelyn and her grandson pack and deliver food to senior citizens in Northeast Philadelphia once a month.
Lorena Plaza joined Independence in October as VP of Financial Planning and Analysis. In this role, she leads annual and strategic financial planning, as well as processes for forecasting, cost alignment, analysis of actual results, and board reporting. Lorena has extensive experience in global finance and strategic management, serving most recently as director of Strategic Cost Management at Barclaycard.
