The new, prospective animated series about Lionel Messi's life will be developed by the player together with Sony Music Entertainment and produced in both English and Spanish.
"Since I was a kid I have always loved animated series and my children are big fans of animated characters. Being able to participate in an animated project makes me happy because it fulfills one of my dreams," Messi told Deadline.
According to Deadline, the series will be aimed at children and teenagers. The plot will feature Messi facing various obstacles through a video game.
Sony Music's Premium Content Division will oversee the development and distribution of the series. At this time, there is no word on any partner network or streamer where the content may be viewed going forward.
"It is a privilege for Sony Music to collaborate with Lionel Messi on this project to showcase the power and lessons of sport in partnership with the greatest soccer player of all time and one of the greatest athletes in history," Fernando Cabral, the executive vice president of Business Development in Sony Music Entertainment's Latin America-Iberia Region, told Deadline.
The VP added that the company is eager to bring this "moving and humbling series to screens for audiences of all ages around the world."
So far, no premiere date has been announced. However, Sony Music said that it is looking to launch the series this year.
Messi has already participated in other TV shows, such as Amazon Prime Video's Selección Argentina: la serie, which gave a behind-the-scenes look of the South American team on their way to Qatar 2022.
