It is no surprise that in an industry historically run by white men, women are underrepresented.

Data compiled by streaming platform Deezer, points to women making up just 4% of the most-listened electronic artists and only 7% in styles such as hip-hop and rock, failing to achieve gender diversity in the scenes.

Despite pop being the most diverse genre on Deezer today, only 42% of the top global artists played are women, meaning representation still falls short of a 50/50 gender split.

Faced with this data and in celebration of International Women's Day, Deezer is promoting two initiatives on its platform to give visibility and a voice to female artists.

One of the initiatives is the launch of a new exclusive series of women's content to actively support female artists. The platform will give users access to valuable details within the app, including information about its own gender equity issues and interesting facts about women artists.

Starting March 8, a module called 'Women's Voices' will also be launched on the platform, which intends to boost women artists with exclusive Original Sessions, selected playlists, and special content to share about women's participation in the industry — a space that will make you dance, cry and enjoy with their music and podcasts.

Deezer's new playlist series, 'Women behind the music,' will also promote female songwriters, producers, and artists that wrote, produced, or performed international hits.

In an effort to maintain this as a space for diversity, the platform has also launched a series of original playlists selected by Latin artists, such as 'Girls support girls,' with the best female collaborations, selected by Ximena Sariñana, 'Morras,' by Mon Laferte with her favorite female voices, and 'Nuestra voz: Women power,' with the most powerful female voices selected by Lila Downs.

'Women's Voices' will have a permanent place on Deezer, according to Kim Weaver, Head of Global Music Programming at Deezer.
