In the early hours of April 8, 2025, Latin music suffered an irreparable loss with the death of Rubby Pérez, one of the most iconic voices of merengue. The 69-year-old artist was performing at Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo when the venue’s roof tragically collapsed, killing him and at least 113 others.

Roberto Antonio Pérez Herrera, known artistically as Rubby Pérez, was born on March 8, 1956, in Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic. As a young man, he dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but a car accident that left him with permanent damage to his left leg redirected his passion toward music. He studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Santo Domingo, where he refined his skills in piano and guitar.

His professional music career began in 1978 with bands like Los Juveniles de Baní and Los Hijos del Rey. However, his major breakthrough came in 1982 when he joined Wilfrido Vargas’s orchestra. During his time with Vargas, Pérez stood out with hits like “El Africano” and “Volveré,” establishing himself as a key figure in the merengue scene.

In 1987, Rubby Pérez launched his solo career, releasing hits that resonated across Latin America, such as “Buscando Tus Besos,” “Dame Veneno,” and “Enamorado de Ella.” His powerful voice and magnetic stage presence earned him the nickname “The Loudest Voice in Merengue.” Over the years, he received multiple accolades, including gold and platinum records, as well as Casandra Awards in the Dominican Republic.

Beyond his musical success, Pérez was known for his humanitarian work. In 2010, the Committee of Latin American Political Parties in the United States (COPOLA USA) honored him for aiding victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Rubby Pérez’s tragic death has left a void in the world of merengue and Latin music. His legacy lives on through the countless songs he performed and the cultural impact he made. Artists and public figures alike have expressed deep sorrow at his passing, highlighting both his artistic brilliance and his generous spirit.

As the Dominican community and fans around the world mourn his loss, Rubby Pérez’s music will continue to play — a lasting tribute to an artist who gave his life to song.
