Colombia's Carlos Vives is known worldwide for his catchy hits, which are usually hard to get out of the mind. Together with the Black Eyed Peas and Latin rapper duo Play-N-Skillz, they released "Teke Teke," a song with all the makings of a Summer hit.

On other collaborations, such as the popular "La Bicilceta" with his compatriot Shakira, Vives achieved success while remaining faithful to his classic style, marked by Colombian popular music, cumbia, vallenato and some pop-rock beats. But in “Teke Teke,” which is part of his new album Cumbiana II, he fuses Latin rhythms with hip-hop verses and rap poses, something unusual until now.

The lyrics, and especially the chorus, are not too complicated. In addition to the “teke teke teke teke” repeated in a loop, a tribute to Rihanna's "Work" stands out, and the song as a whole conveys good vibes and the desire to dance and celebrate.

"I like to see you laugh, I like to see you jump, like the moon that bathes the sea, between your kisses I got lost, it's something I can't explain, my heart wants to escape," the Colombian sings before being joined on the record by others.

The video and scenery evoke the festive atmosphere of Santa Marta, Vives' hometown. In some parts, the artists appear surrounded by a crowd, which dances a special choreography prepared for the song. The bright colors stand out in the clothes and scenery of the video, as well as the insinuating sights.

"Teke Teke" is an expression used recurrently in the Latin urban universe, although it is also a Japanese urban legend that refers to a ghost.

With the aim of opening up to new markets with his new album, Vives decided to sing alongside the Black Eyed Peas, the band from Los Angeles that achieved world fame with their legendary song, “Where is the Love?” Their album Elephunk (2003) was a phenomenon, and they continue to succeed to this day. Their last release was Translation (2020), and the group has won to six Grammys throughout their career.

Rappers Juan "Play" Salinas and Oscar "Skillz" Salinas, of Argentinian and Venezuelan origin, contributed their experience to the production of the song. In addition to their experience as singers, they have produced hits for artists like Snoop Dogg, Steve Aoki, David Guetta, 50 Cent, Pitbull and Daddy Yankee, among others.

On Friday, May 13, Carlos Vives presented his complete album, Cumbiana II, which also includes collaborations with Camilo, Ricky Martin, Fito Páez and Pedro Capó. Recorded in Colombia, Puerto Rico and the U.S., the album is an exploration of modern music based on ancient sounds from his native Colombia.
