The Taller de Músics, one of the most prestigious factories for new musical talents in Barcelona, organizes once again the “Ciutat Flamenco” festival. From this Thursday, May 20, until next Sunday, May 29, the city of Barcelona will welcome famous dancers and singers, in an event that has become a benchmark in the flamenco genre.

The festival promotes the exhibition of "classical and heterodox, transgressive and interdisciplinary proposals in the field of contemporary flamenco". Running since 1993, it initially started under the name Flamenco Ciutat Vella. As of 2012, it changed locations and adopted the current name.

Lovers of this musical style have the date marked in red on their calendars. And it's not just about enjoying the greatest of flamenco or new talents, but also meetings of scholars of the subject are scheduled, and even a singing contest. The contest commemorates one hundred years of the I Cante Jondo Contest, organized by Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Turina and Federico García Lorca in 1922, in the spectacular Alhambra in Granada.

The festival is distributed on stages in different corners of the city: Luz de Gas, the Auditorium, the Center Artesà Tradiciounàrius, the Tablao Flamenco Cordobés, the Tablao de Carmen, Casa Seat and the José de la Vega School.

The inaugural event will be a performance by Naike Ponce, who will present her show “Vivir”, an allusion to human existence based on the artist's own experiences. It is consistent with the philosophy promoted by the festival, which annually tries to review the ways of promoting flamenco art.

"Ciutat Flamenco was born from the importance of flamenco in Barcelona, since the evolution of this genre would not have been the same without the city", considers the organization. In addition to hosting the great references, new promises of canto, guitar playing and dance have been born on its stages.

The nine-day agenda is full of attractive proposals. On Saturday the 21st it will be the turn of bailaor Javier Valero, who in his show “Flamenco interior” will perform accompanied by the cante of Vicky Romero. On the same day, Miguel de la Tolea and Tuto Fernández will also perform on another stage.

Another attractive event will be the fusion of flamenco and jazz proposed by Los Aurora with their show “La Balsa de la Medusa” (Wednesday 25). For their show, they will have the innovative bailaores Pol Jiménez and José Manuel Álvarez. On the same stage of the Luz de Gas room, the bailaora Fuensanta La Moneta will perform the following day. In her show “Divino amor humano”, she mixes the poetry of Santa Teresa de Jesús with the work of Federico García Lorca.

The fourth edition of the Congress of Flamencology and Flamenco Pedagogy stands out, which will be held on Friday 27 and Saturday 28. During the talks, the flamenco side of the Catalan capital will be vindicated.
