How Omar Montes brought flamenco to Atlanta
The Spanish singer talked about his experience of returning to the genre.
Spanish singer Omar Montes began his musical career performing urban music and after achieving great success in Spain, decided to return to his flamenco origins to make his culture known on a global. Where did he start? Atlanta.
Upon arriving in Atlanta, the Spaniard said he met with several local producers who did not know flamenco, but rather trap, a music synonymous with the city, so he proposed to merge both genres and thus captivate the public.
"My proposal was to add trap sounds to gypsy cante jondo, the deepest flamenco. It blew their minds because they listened to that, even to the beat they didn't know how to get it right, because bulerías is a tres por cuatro and doesn't go with reggaeton," Montes told CNN's Zona Pop.

The artist's decision was questioned by some other more conservative singers of the genre. However, it also impressed many others because of its great reception.
Quejíos de un maleante is a production that brings together hip-hop and trap rhythms, characteristic of a city like Atlanta, with more traditional flamenco.
"Many of them [purists] have told me that it is the best album that has been made to date and others have told me that they can't believe that this work of art comes from me and that it is going to revolutionize flamenco," the Spaniard said.
Montes' production Quejíos de un maleante is available now on the main streaming platforms so all can enjoy Spanish flamenco in the best urban style.
