Enrique Bunbury says goodbye to the stage due to voice problems
Despite the devastating announcement, his fans in the U.S. and Spain still have one last chance to enjoy his songs live.
The voice of Enrique Bunbury, singer of the legendary band Héroes del Silencio, and a father of Spanish pop rock, is saying goodbye to live performances. The 54-year-old artist, who will be on tour this year, announced he cannot take it anymore and is retiring from the stage.
In a statement released on social media, the singer from Zaragoza said he will not perform due to health problems.
“The reality is that my throat is tight and irritated, and my airways make even the slightest exercise and the execution of my work difficult,” he wrote.
In the past, he had problems with his vocal cords that endangered or canceled performances.
Despite the devastating announcement, his fans will have one last chance to enjoy his songs live.
"The concerts that are pending between now and September 2022 in the United States and Spain will be the last ones," he wrote.
According to Bunbury, on the previous tour between 2015 and 2016, he suffered from vocal chord issues. The forced break during the pandemic made him believe that his problems had gone away, perhaps allowing himself be carried away by his "desire to meet again with the public, technicians and musicians on stage, which is a very powerful force."

But in during recent performances in Mexico, he “realized that the problem was serious and did not go away,” so he had to make the sad decision, which was very thoughtful.
He said the difficulties started “from the moment I leave my house and trips and when the show begin. A compendium of pains that affects me until the moment I get on stage.” Sadly, he noted that "what was normally pleasure and delight has become an immense source of pain and suffering."

For this reason, he had to cancel his performance on Feb. 12 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, after a successful night on the same stage. His team announced that it was due to “an acute laryngitis.”
Despite his definitive retirement from live performances, the main source of life and ecstasy due to the communion that artists experience with their audience, he will continue “composing songs, recording albums and writing poetry.”
A singer with melodies as high and delicate as Bunbury has a very difficult time performing with a throat problems. With Héroes del Silencio, he embodied the rock character, influenced by voices like those of Jim Morrison and David Bowie. Later, during his solo career, he got closer to Latin sounds and rhythms.
His health problems did not influence his creativity. In 2020, he released two albums: Possible and Curso de levitación intensivo. In 2021, he released another five-song album, titled El Puerto.
His last live circuit will not be easy at all. There will be 16 concerts in the U.S. and nine in Spain. The shows will also include a large portion of his song catalogue.
