After an alert from the Colombian National Police about messages that incite to violence, Twitter blocked the accounts of Iván Márquez, leader of FARC, and Jesús Santrich, (both fugitives from justice) for violating their policies on "terrorism and violent extremism."

The trigger for the ban was a recent video featuring Márquez, who expressed his support for the revocation of the current President Iván Duque, who supposedly would be "damaging the peace agreement" reached in 2016 to end the armed conflict in Colombia.

Twitter provisionally suspended the accounts @IvanMarquezFarc, @JSantrich_FARC and @SMarquetalia (The Second Marquetalia), a profile of the "new rebellion" — the group of ex-guerrillas who in 2019 took sides in the peace agreement.

According to data from the Armed Forces, the group has more than 2,500 combatants and are involved in drug trafficking and illegal mining.

Marquez and Santrich, as well as the other heads of militant groups, are hidden in Venezuela, according to the Colombian Government.

The Peace Tribunal in charge of judging the most serious crimes of the armed conflict denied Márquez and Santrich the criminal benefits enshrined in the pact. In the case of their capture, they would remain at the disposal of the ordinary justice system.

Social media like Twitter and Facebook, and their security policies are giving a great example of the eternal debate around "freedom of expression" and are showing that when "opinions" threaten, attack or violate others, they should not be accepted or tolerated.
