The Como la Flor Band, the Selena tribute band turns 10
The Selena tribute group celebrates 10 years with Tina as lead vocalist and image of the band.
"The Como la Flor Band" is the first group to pay tribute to the "Queen of Tex-Mex" and one of the most emblematic. Last Sunday, July 18, hundreds of Selena's fans gathered at Warner Ranch Park to listen to "The Como La Flor Band" and the timeless and popular songs of the diva.
Eddie Bevins, director and percussionist of "The Como la Flor Band," formed the group in California on the recommendation of a manager.
Bevins looked for musicians who were interested in forming a tribute group, and although several musicians have passed through the band in 10 years, the current group has "a more familiar feel."
The vocalist, Tina, came to the group in 2019, when the band needed a replacement who could play Selena for a concert in California and has since stayed on as voice and image. Tina had always been compared to Selena because of her physical resemblance.
"I remember a fan coming up to me crying after one of the concerts," said the lead vocalist in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in Spanish via Zoom.
During the concert of "The Como la Flor Band," the atmosphere was lively, the group opened the night with a medley of Selena's disco music.
"When you listen to Selena's music it's so infectious, her energy invades you and you can't help but dance and have a good time," recounted one attendee.
The band was founded in 2011 in the small town of Holtville, and has since become the most respected and trendsetting tribute band in the nation. The eight band members have incredible chemistry on stage, which comes through in every show. The project dedicated to Selena's fans and pays tribute to the Queen of Tex-Mex and the Mexican-American community.
