Changes in the newsroom: AL DÍA creates 3 new positions
PHILADELPHIA -- In an effort to continue to improve its ability to provide quality content both on the web and in print, AL DÍA News Media has restructured its editorial leadership creating three new positions.
First, Sabrina Vourvoulias, who as served as Managing Editor of AL DÍA since 2012, will be taking on the role of Executive Editor. In this new role, Vourvoulias will focus on developing and expanding AL DÍA’s commentary section across platforms, in both English and Spanish.
“‘How many people of color are columnists in @nytimes, @washingtonpost, @politico, @BloombergView?’ was the recently tweeted question of journalist Jose Antonio Vargas under the hashtag #JournalismSoWhite,” Vourvoulias said. “His was a rhetorical question. But at AL DÍA News, where diversity is in our DNA, we are setting out to change that. Our Op-Ed commentary section online (and in print) at the moment offers a small but manifold group of mostly regional writers taking on topics from reproductive justice to topical political commentary; from cultural code-switching to gentrification. And now we are committed to expanding and diversifying it much further.”
In addition, Vourvoulias will be editing the weekly Op-Ed newsletter, “Thoughts, Provoked;” a newly-redesigned Spanish-language print edition of AL DÍA; and will continue to develop the discussion series “Media and the City,” and other projects that deeply engage with identity and representation in journalism.
Also elevated to new roles and responsibilities are former Senior Reporter Ana Gamboa and Knight Fellow Max Marin. The two now veteran Philly reporters have been given the roles of Online Editor for Spanish content and Online Editor for English content respectively. In their new roles, Gamboa and Marin will be responsible with populating the AL DÍA website with quality content in both languages.
"As the online news editors for English and Spanish, we're tasked with expanding AL DÍA's digital news presence in a way that compliments rather than competes with the weekly print edition,” said Marin.
“A city as diverse as Philadelphia needs access to bilingual journalism across multiple platforms, and that's what we're going to provide," said Gamboa.
Alongside her new responsibilities, Gamboa has launched a Spanish email newsletter to parallel the already existing English Newsbites. Both are sent out daily with English in the morning and Spanish in the Afternoon.
“We want to put emphasis where emphasis should be,” said AL DÍA CEO Hernan Guaracao. “Keeping our online presence vibrant while also keeping our print product fresh. The evolution of media opens up the opportunity for leadership in new areas. This move is part of what AL DÍA has done through our history, which is to adapt.”
