Increased security measures for the 2nd Street Strut
Expect heightened security and road closures during the traditional “2nd Street Strut” celebration which takes place after New Year’s Mummer’s parade.
The 2nd Street Safety Committee and Pennsport Civic Association, along with city leaders and local police, announced that they have taken steps to prepare for the event which takes place on South Second Street.
“After the parade, the Mummers will make their way back to 2nd Street to perform for the community,” the organizations said in a statement. “Two judging areas will be located at 2nd and Reed (Sacred Heart) and 3rd and Ritner (Mt. Caramel). At each judging area there will be food trucks, restrooms and vendors available to the public.”
Along with food trucks and vendors, folks will also see paramedics and police bike patrols scanning the streets for any disorderly conduct or underage drinking which have been issues in the past. According to the release, Homeland Security will also be present.
Barricades will be placed along Second Street from Washington Avenue to Ritner Street. Below is a roads to be closed listed in the press release.
The following roads will be closed: 2nd Street from Washington Ave to Mifflin St, 3rd St. from Mifflin St. to Porter St., 100 & 200 blocks between Washington Ave. to Mifflin St., and 200 & 300 blocks of streets from Mifflin St. to Porter St. except Snyder Ave.
The following streets will be open for police access and pedestrian crossing only: Dickinson, Tasker, Morris, and McKean. Cars must be removed from 2nd Street and other designated areas by Friday morning. Cars can be left on side streets.
