Philly tops two big-name lists of travel destinations
In the last week, Philadelphia has topped two big-name lists as a must-visit international destination.
Some will undoubtedly chalk it up to the signal boost the city received after Pope Francis' visit during the World Meeting of Families in September. Some might credit the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which has chosen Philly as its 2016 showboat. Others will just say, well, it's because we're awesome.
Fodor's Travel, one of the most respected names in travel recommendations, released its fifth-annual Fodor's Go List on Tuesday morning. Lo and behold, Philadelphia is one of just six U.S. destinations to make the 25-city list that spans 20 countries.
Fodor's glosses over the city's well-known selling points and mentions "formerly under-the-radar" neighborhoods like Fishtown and Northern Liberties that have "experienced an immense revitalization with the arrival of many new breweries and beer gardens, turning these once-quiet neighborhoods into hip nightlife and cuisine hubs." The write-up also mentions the new Schyukill River Banks Boardwalk, the Comcast skyscraper, and the new Four Seasons hotel opening next year. Oh, and the DNC.
The nod from Fodor's came just a week after another one. SmarterTravel, a blog that runs on the Huffington Post, listed Philly as one of 12 international destinations that should be on everyone's radar in 2016. We're in good company with Brazil, Myanmar, Chile, Spain and Poland.
Of course, SmarterTravel made the usual nods to Philly's rich history, its heritage sites and its world-class art museums. But like Fodor's, the blog also notes a more contemporary selling points: the recently opened One Liberty Observation Deck, and also that Philly was named one of the best North American cities for live music.
Maybe it was Pope Francis' blessing after all? Who knows, but we'll revel in the hype for a minute.
