Rep. Cruz honors government workers for Hispanic Heritage Month
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), State Rep. Angel Cruz presented several awards to Latino public servants on both the city and state levels. It's an annual tradition that Cruz began when he assumed office 16 years ago.
This year's certificates of recognition went to the following: Caption Peter Crespo of the Philadelphia Fire Department; Jose Molina, executive director of the Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs; Jennifer Algarin-Barnes, staff inspector for the Sheriff's Office; Deputy Sheriff Dolores Ramos; Deputy Sheriff Sargeant Joshua Perez.
"As we celebrate Hispanic heritage, I want to make sure that we recognize the Hispanics in all different branches of government," Cruz said. "We want people to know that they're there, they exist, and we're proud of their service."
Cruz says he looks at statewide employment each year to select the awardees This year's group particularly highlights the Sherriff's department.
"This is the first time the department has had this many Latinos in high positions," Cruz said. "So wanted to thank the sheriff's office for that."
