Americans have become very dependent on their smartphones, says recent poll.

According to a new Gallup poll, 46 percent of American smartphone users agree with the statement "I can't imagine my life without my smartphone," while 54 percent disagree.

“The smartphone is transformative for those who use it, not only by making their lives better, but by becoming something of a fifth limb,” Lydia Saad, a senior editor for the Gallup poll, wrote. “Most take it with them everywhere and sleep with it, and if it goes missing -- even for a day -- four in 10 would feel a significant level of stress.”

For women, attachment to their smartphone is higher (51 percent) than men (41 percent) at each age level. People between the age of 18 to 29 are also more likely to be attached to their phones (51 percent).

In addition, iPhone users are more attached to their phones (52 percent) than Android users (43 percent).

So how would smartphone users feel if they didn’t have their phone? According to the poll, 42 percent of all smartphone users say losing their device for a day would make them somewhat (32 percent) or very (10 percent) anxious.
