Earthship-style greenhouse to land in Kensington
A crowdfunding campaign will launch Tuesday to raise money for an “earthship-style” greenhouse in West Kensington.
Norris Square Neighborhood Project, Hispanics in Philanthropy, and Univision have partnered together for the community greening project, which will be built on an existing garden space at W. Susquehanna Avenue and N. Palethorp Street, just a few blocks from Norris Square.
Organizers envision this as a “barn raiser” that will bring out both neighborhood youth and older community members in the name of wholesomely grown food.
“As an organization in the Latino community, it's important to us to grow foods that community residents can use in their kitchens,” Justin Trezza, director of the Norris Square Neighborhood, said in a press release Monday.
“It is difficult to germinate seeds for ajíces, gandules, and other important produce without a place to do it. A greenhouse would provide a space to teach youth about seed germination and sustainability and help us to grow more culturally relevant produce for our community.”
What will they do if they don’t crowdfund enough money? “We’re still going to go through with it,” Trezza said, citing additional funding through the Get Hype Philly initiative.
Of course, the bulk of the project’s materials will be recycled, but the solar panels will be costly. Trezza estimates the total cost in the $8,000 - $10,000 range. Construction is slated to begin in September.
More campaign details will be available Tuesday, June 9th, via www.hipgive.org.
