On Saturday, Feb. 28, Taller Puertorriqueño held the 19th Annual Arturo Schomburg Symposium: Afro-Latinos on the Move: Migration, Civil Rights and Politics. The talks examined the migratory challenges of Afro-Latinos in the Americas and how societal differences and geographic locations have affected politics and civil rights. The symposium featured a diverse group of distinguished scholars including Dr. Herman L. Bennett, author of Colonial Blackness: A History of Afro-Mexico, who spoke about "Rituals, Violence and Black Bodies."

"The symposium is a full, thoughtful, stirring conversation and an excellent opportunity for the Latino and African American communities come together to engage in a new dialogue of interconnections and commonalities,” said Dr. Carmen Febo-San Miguel, executive director of Taller. The Annual Schomburg Symposium at Taller Puertorriqueño honors the life and work of Puerto Rican-born, Arturo A. Schomburg who became a self-taught scholar amassing one of the largest collections of books and world-wide research on the African Diaspora. His collection became the cornerstone of the New York Public Library’s Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints, known today as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
