Philadelphia union boss on trial for conspiracy, extortion and arson
The trial for 73-year-old Joseph Dougherty, leader of Philadelphia’s Local 401, is now in full swing. The veteran leader stands accused of awarding ironworker union members who physically destroyed nonunion projects under the cover of night.
On Monday, ironworker William Gillin, who has pled guilty to his charges, described “night work” — how union members would destroy progress, block deliveries and further undermine projects that employed nonunion contractors. For up and coming workers, “night work” proved a sure way to secure work and get ahead.
Possibly the most recognizable case of intimidation is a December 2012 arson of a Quaker meeting house in Chestnut Hill that was under nonunion construction that caused $500,000 in damages.
Dougherty is the only defendant out of twelve who pleaded not guilty to the charges.
