Top 10 Instagrammed places in Philly
Instagram is big deal in Philadelphia. Groups of photographers gather to hold ‘Instameets,’ have a community Instagram account and Facebook page (@IGers_philly) and use Philly-centric hashtags like #igers_philly, #WilliamPennWednesday and #BenFranklinFriday.
Those who use the mobile app know that the City of Brotherly Love has many iconic and amazing sights to share with the rest of the world. Visit Philly has recently released a list of this year's top 10 Instagrammed places in Philadelphia.
1. Spruce Street Harbor Park
New to Philadelphia this past summer was the Spruce Street Harbor Park. The seasonal park on the Delaware River Waterfront at Penn's Landing was a hit on Instagram and with actual visitors. According to Visit Philly, the park received more than a half a million visitors.
2. Dilworth Park
The new Dilworth Park (formerly Dilworth Plaza) at City Hall opened in September after a long and costly renovation. During the warm weather, the park featured an 11,600-square-foot computer-programmable fountain that used recycled rainwater. That fountain was transformed into an ice skating rink (see below) for the winter months. The park also includes an outdoors café by chef Jose Garces, glass structures that provide access to SEPTA trains and trolleys, and will later include green spaces.
3. Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk
The boardwalk opened in September as a 2,000 feet long, over-the-water extension of the Schuylkill River Trail. It gave such as great view of the skyline that thousands of people walked along it every week, according to Visit Philly.
4. The Oval
The Oval returned to the parkway this past summer with outdoor concerts, movies, games, food trucks, beer gardens and much more. In April, it even held Philly Tech Week's kick-off event, which included playing Tetris on the 29-story Cira Centre building.
5. Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest
This winter wonderland, created by the Delaware River Waterfront Corp (DRWC), offers light shows, shopping, arcade games, fire pits, a restaurant by Garces Events, and of course, ice skating! It closes for the season on March 1.
6. Rothman Ice Rink
Dilworth Park was transformed into the Rothman Institute Ice Rink for the winter season. The rink is open seven days a week (including holidays, and offers skating lessons on Sunday mornings. Worried about getting too cold? The rink also has a warming tent.
7. Love Park/Christmas Village
Holiday shoppers visited the German-style outdoor market in Love Park to find the perfect gift like handcrafted jewelry, clothing, fine art, food, and Christmas ornaments from Germany, Mexico, Egypt, and Ukraine, from more than 60 vendors. Guests also enjoyed food and drinks, such as Bratwurst, mulled wine and gingerbread, and watched performances by local musicians.
8. PHS Pop-Up Garden
The annual Pop Up Garden, by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, returned for its fourth year. The transformed community space was located at 15th and South Streets, and featured hammocks, palm trees, tropical cocktails, beer, food from the Jerk Hut and various food trucks and activities and events like Quizzo, movie nights, and boot camp-style workouts.
9. Independence Beer Garden
The 20,000 square-foot beer garden opened in July. This popular spot, located in Historic Philadelphia, included local craft beer, delicious food, activities like ping pong, and shuffleboard and first-come, first-serve communal seating areas like picnic tables and fire pits.
10. Washington Avenue Green and Pier 53
The new Washington Avenue Green and Pier 53 were upgraded this year to include a path, an elevated boardwalk and an observation tower.
