Here’s something to be thankful for — a Thanksgiving dinner costs less in Philly than in other areas of the U.S. Still, many families struggle to put food on the table.

The City Controller’s office has estimated that the average Philadelphia Thanksgiving costs $46.41, three whole dollars cheaper than the national average for a typical Thanksgiving meal complete with dishes like turkey, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, stuffing and cranberries.

But for some families, that can be a lot of money, especially at the end of the month when SNAP benefits start running out. According to the Coalition Against Hunger, 22 percent of Philadelphia’s 1.5 million residents — 338,000 people — suffer from food insecurity and struggle to consistently put healthy meals on the table. One in three Philadelphia residents receive SNAP benefits. The average SNAP benefit in Philadelphia works out to $21 a day for a family of four, so one Thanksgiving meal could cost as much as two day’s worth of groceries.

Several non-profits, from the Red Cross to Health Partners Foundation, have organized giveaways to help with the biggest Thanksgiving expense. With an average price tag at $19.44 in the city, that expense is none other than the turkey.
