Officially setting up a rematch against Republican Representative Scott Perry, Harrisburg City Councilmember Shamaine Daniels announced her 2024 bid for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The three-term Harrisburg City Councilmember and former 2022 Democratic nominee for Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District officially announced her decision to run again for the same seat in 2024 on Thursday, April 27.

The Venezuelan-born lawmaker would be the first Latina to be elected to Congress from Pennsylvania. The former immigration lawyer was the first Latina to be elected to Harrisburg’s City Council.

Daniels' 2022 run was one of the toughest Democratic challenges to date against Perry in his decade representing Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District.

She’s wasting no time by announcing her run more than two-years out, and looks to build on the momentum that will be needed to unseat Perry.

“Last year, we shocked everyone with our strong performance against Perry despite the disparity in campaign resources,” she said. “But I was not so surprised.”

“Throughout the campaign I met and talked with voters from every walk of life and from every political party,” Daniels added. “Voters in PA-10 are tired of having a Representative in Congress who cares more about Donald Trump and right-wing extremists across the country than he does about families here in the district.”

The Republican Representative became a national name to many during the January 6th Committee hearings, which revealed his assistance of former President Donald Trump’s desperate attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election.

His cell phone was seized by the FBI as part of the investigation into the insurrection last Summer, but it’s his right-wing agenda and role as Chairman of the Freedom Caucus that is in part motivating Daniels’ second try.

Perry’s policy stances include supporting cuts in programs such as Social Security and Medicare

“Perry is out of step with this district, and that is on full display with his plans to jeopardize Social Security and Medicare while putting the entire economy in peril,” Daniels said.

“Today, April 27, is the 85th anniversary of the first Social Security check being mailed to an American. We chose this day to announce my campaign to highlight not just Perry’s extremism, but his callous disregard for the people he was elected to represent,” she added.

Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District was not a race of interest for national Democrats during the 2022 midterms.

However, Daniels’ strong performance might have forced the Party’s hand heading towards 2024 as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee recently announced that they’d target Perry.

Perry defeated Daniels by over 24,000 votes in 2022, 53.8% to 46.2%.

Daniels will be running a campaign to improve jobs, infrastructure, education, healthcare, women’s care, veterans, and other issues, according to her campaign website found here: https://danielsforcongress.org/

The website opens up on a picture of the Republican incumbent in a red filter, alongside two photos of the Jan. 6 insurrection, and it reads, “We can do better than Scott Perry.”

“I am excited to get this campaign started, and excited to defeat Scott Perry in 2024 and give our community the representation it deserves,” Daniels' statement concludes.
