On the evening of Jan. 12, House Speaker  Nancy Pelosi named Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-X) among nine representatives to manage the impeachment proceedings.

He and the others will serve as key players in a historic day in the United States, being the first time a sitting U.S. president has been impeached twice.

The House is expected to impeach Donald Trump on Jan. 13 for inciting a deadly riot on the capitol exactly a week before. Democrats and some Republicans blame the president and other Republican leaders like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley for fueling the violence that resulted in five deaths, extensive damage, and a global embarrassment.

“Tonight I have the solemn privilege of naming the Managers of the impeachment trial of Donald Trump,” Pelosi said in her announcement. “It is their constitutional and patriotic duty to present the case for the President’s impeachment and removal.”

Apart from Castro, those selected are Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD-08) who serves as Lead Manager,  Rep. Diana DeGette (CO-01), Rep. David Cicilline (RI-01), Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15) Rep. Ted Lieu (CA-33), Rep. Stacey Plaskett, (Virgin Islands Delegate), Rep. Madeleine Dean (PA-04, and Rep. Joe Neguse (CO-02).

Reps. Raskin, Cicilline, and Lieu — each serving on the House Judiciary Committee— introduced the article of impeachment against Trump on Jan. 11, for “Incitement of Insurrection” for his actions on the 6th.

Castro serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. He has been outspoken in criticizing both President Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

The managers will have a chance to argue their case before the full Senate before the vote. President Trump’s lawyers will then have a chance to present their case.

“For the first time in our nation’s history, the transfer of power has not been peaceful,” he wrote in response to Pelosi’s selection. “The responsibility to serve as an impeachment manager is a solemn duty — one that arises from my oath to protect the Constitution and safeguard our democracy for future generations.”

Castro’s brother, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary under President Obama, Julián Castro, voiced his own support for Joaaquin’s key role in the impeachment proceedings.

“My brother @JoaquinCastrotx takes on every leadership role with integrity and determination. I can think of no one better to help lead the impeachment of this morally bankrupt president.” he wrote.

While House proceedings are swift, the Republican-led Senate is not expected to hold a trial and vote to convict Trump before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration day.
