The inaugural AL DÍA 40 Under Forty event will be a showcase of the most diverse and impactful young professionals in various fields of work across the Philadelphia region.

At the virtual event, taking place August 20, 2020, Jazmin Reyes, 28, will be one of the 40 honorees. Currently, she is the Program Manager at Eaton Aerospace Corporation

As part of the lead-up to the event, AL DÍA asked each of the 40 honorees the same three questions and collected their responses.

Here are Jazmin Reyes’ responses:

What is the biggest challenge in your professional journey?

After graduation I joined a Rotational Leadership Development Program for Engineers in Operations. It offered invaluable experiences, but it presented my biggest challenge: relocating away from family and friends. Latinos don’t have the tv-show expectation that their children will move out at 18. It’s heartbreaking to feel that you are disregarding your family because you can’t be physically present. I constantly remind myself that my success also belongs to my family. Technology and my Philly friends & community also help.

What's your proudest achievement in your career?

I’m fortunate to work for a corporation that values I&D and where I lead a National Diversity Committee as a SHPE liaison. To that end, my proudest achievement is to have been able to enhance my job function with my personal interest. I build on my leadership and program management skills while coordinating nationwide initiatives that support Latinos in STEM. The work our committee does is a constant source of pride. I am humbled by the opportunity.

Beyond corporate D&I efforts, what will make true inclusivity happen?

True inclusivity will happen when we are visible in the rooms where decisions are made. As an engineer I am inclined to suggest metrics: proportional representation in institutes of higher education and local government. As a program manager, I offer a list of actions: 1) Join a professional society where you can embrace being a role model and educate our youth 2) Fill out the Census 3) Register to Vote 4) Take the time to research local matters, then Vote.
