"NOW YOU KNOW!! Beyond elated to be back on stage, and starting this journey with these amazing friends! See you soon, NYC!” actress Lindsey Méndez wrote in a post on her Instagram.

Méndez will join Daniel Radcliffe, and Jonathan Groff in Merrily We Roll Along, a New York Theater Workshop production.

She will play the role of Mary, Jonathan will play Franklin, and Radcliffe will play whistleblower Charley Kringas. Merrily We Roll Along tells how these three friends try to make their way in the musical theater industry in New York through failures, successes, hopelessness and disappointments. The story is set out in reverse chronology. That is, it begins in 1976 when the three friends are separated and gradually goes back to 1957, when the group formed and their bonds seemed unbreakable.

Méndez is known in the entertainment industry for having won a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance in Carrusel de Broadway in 2018. These three awards are known as the “triple crown.”

Groff is known for his roles in Frozen and The Matrix Resurrections. Radcliffe, for his part, needs no introduction. He has cemented his career as an actor in the Harry Potter saga and Merrily We Roll Along marks his return to Off-Broadway since he starred in Privacy at the Public in 2016.

A new version

The new version of Merrily We Roll Along is based on a play written in 1934 by American journalist and playwright George S. Kaufman and American theater director Moss Hart.

The first Broadway version of the production opened in 1981 with a cast of teenagers and young adults. The play was not as successful as expected and was cancelled. The show has subsequently been rewritten and made it to the London stage, where it has won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2000.

The new version of the musical will be directed by Maria Friedman. The creative team also includes Tim Jackson as Choreographer, Catherine Jayes as Music Supervisor and Alvin Hough, Jr. as Music Director. Soutra Gilmour is in charge of set and costume design, Amith Chandrashaker is in charge of lighting, and Kai Harada is in charge of sound. The score is by Stephen Sondheim and the libretto is by George Furth.

The preview performance of Merrily We Roll Along is scheduled for Nov. 21 and the official opening night will be on Dec. 12. The production will close on Jan. 8.

Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 21.
