Buena Vista Social Club Musical Set for Broadway Debut in 2025
A musical inspired by the iconic album “Buena Vista Social Club” will premiere on Broadway next year.
The beloved sounds of prerevolutionary Cuban music are set to take center stage as “Buena Vista Social Club” makes its Broadway debut in 2025. The musical, inspired by the famed 1997 album that introduced global audiences to Afro-Cuban rhythms, will begin previews on February 21 and officially open on March 19 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater.
The story is set in Havana and follows a group of aging musicians as they gather in a recording studio, reflecting on their vibrant youth and the turbulent times during the Cuban Revolution. While the narrative loosely follows the history of the original album’s creation, it also incorporates fictional elements and songs released separately from the album.
The musical initially premiered Off Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in late 2023, where it received praise for its music and choreography. Jesse Green, chief theater critic for The New York Times, described the show as “full-of-riches,” commending its song and dance but noting some weaknesses in storytelling. The Broadway version will feature many of the same performers and musicians from the Off Broadway production.

The show features music attributed to the Buena Vista Social Club and a book by Marco Ramirez, known for “The Royale.” Saheem Ali, acclaimed for his work on “Fat Ham,” directs the production, while choreography is handled by the talented married duo Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck. The combination of Ali’s direction and Delgado and Peck’s choreography brings an authentic and dynamic portrayal of Cuban culture to the stage.
The musical is being produced with a budget of $17 million, as reported in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The lead producers, Orin Wolf, John Styles, and Barbara Broccoli, previously collaborated on the Tony Award-winning “The Band’s Visit.” Co-producers include notable figures such as actor and comedian John Leguizamo, Luis Miranda—founder of the Hispanic Federation and father of Lin-Manuel Miranda—and Tony Award-winning actress LaChanze.
“Buena Vista Social Club” aims to celebrate the legacy of the iconic Cuban musicians and their music that captivated the world nearly three decades ago. With a blend of rich storytelling, traditional Cuban songs, and energetic choreography, the musical promises to be a vibrant addition to Broadway, bringing the soulful sounds of Havana to New York City audiences.
