Dominican press reports do not mention when the shooting of the movie “Flight of Fireflies” will begin. 

The film will be directed by José Vásquez Green, who is also in charge of the script. This will be the feature film debut of this Dominican filmmaker, who has studied cinema in the Ukraine and Russia. He has previously stood out directing short films and documentaries.

“Flight of Fireflies” will be a tribute to Evangelina Rodríguez (1879-1947), the first Dominican woman to have graduated from Medicine and become a doctor. Rodríguez was quite an advance for the time in which she lived: the Trujillo dictatorship. In that time, she promoted sex education in schools and laid the foundations for public service for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Dominican actress Cindy Galán will play the role of Alba, a 32-year-old journalist, who stars in this production.

"Alba, who celebrates the conclusion of her monologue “Flight of fireflies", had previously denounced several violations committed by the military and dismissed by the Justice for withdrawal of complaints. The victim recognized a son of a military chief as one of responsible sexual harassment; but her parents force her to keep it under cover. Seeking to prevent impunity, Alba discovers possible links between the military chief and the drug dealer, visualizes scenes from her monologue about Evangelina Rodríguez, the first Dominican doctor, persecuted by Trujillato, ”says the synopsis of the movie. 

The movie also tells how criminals kidnap Alba and try to abuse her, although she manages to escape. "Flight of Fireflies" seeks to become a story of Latin American society that is torn between corruption, abuse of power and gender-based violence.

In addition to Galán, the Mexican actor Juan Carrillo and Haitian actor Jean Jean will be joining the cast.

Cindy Galan began her acting career in the theater and is currently part of the Dominican National Theater Company. Throughout her career, she has participated in 20 plays. 

She made her film debut in the award-winning film “El Proyeccionista” by Dominican director, producer and screenwriter José María Cabral.
