Danny Ramirez: From a fear of flying to piloting an F-18 in 'Top Gun'
Latino actor Danny Ramirez hid his fear of flying planes to audition for the film 'Top Gun: Maverick.'
“After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's finest aviators, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Tom Cruise) finds himself where he always wanted to be, pushing the limits as a fearless test pilot and fending off the breakthrough in his range that would place it on land. Facing an uncertain future and the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly: Maverick,” reads the synopsis of the new top movie in the U.S. Top Gun: Maverick.
The film stars Tom Cruise, Danny Ramirez, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, with Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.
Before the shooting of the film, all of the actors participated in a strict training to fly three different types of aircraft. The bootcamp, led by Tom Cruise himself, has been quite a challenge, especially for Latino actor Danny Ramirez, who plays the role of Fanboy.
“The beginning of the training was very hard because I didn't like to fly, so I lied in the audition. They made us sign something to say that one is not afraid to fly and I thought that the audition was very important to tell (the truth), so I lied," he said in an interview with Telemundo.

“I feel proud, but we have much more to do to get to a place where our stories are represented at the same level as what we contribute in the cinema... It is also a responsibility because I am not only doing it for myself but also for all of us,” he commented.
Ramirez, who is known for his roles in the series On My Block, The Falcon, The Winter Soldier and No Exit, also valued the experience of working alongside a Hollywood star like Cruise. “They had told us: Tom is coming in 10 minutes, and then we are in a corridor and we said, 'Warm up! He is coming; but after he gave us the confidence that we were not there by accident, but that he sees us as stars of the future and for Tom to tell you that, that moment was very memorable for me,” added the 29-year-old Latino.
Top Gun: Maverick, based on the characters created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr., is directed by American filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
The film premiered on May 24 in the United States and two days later worldwide. In its first days in theaters, the film grossed more than $150 million in American theaters.
