“After 80 years cultivating the same land, the Solé family gathers together to harvest their last harvest. In the words of its director, this is a story about belonging to a land, to a place. A drama about perpetual generational tensions, overcoming ancient traditions and the importance of family unity in times of crisis,” reads the synopsis of the Spanish film Alcarrás, directed by Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón.

Alcarràs premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) at the beginning of 2022 and won the Golden Bear for Best Film.

“I would like to dedicate this bear to the farming families who cultivate the land every day so that these fruits reach our plates, because their way of doing agriculture, which is respectful of the earth, today is probably an act of resistance. This award is for the people who farm the land,” Simón said after receiving the award at the Berlinale, marking a milestone for Hispanic filmmakers.

The feature film in Catalan was later released in Spain, where it became the official Spain selection for the Best International Film Academy Award. However, Alcarràs did not manage to sneak into the shortlist released by the Academy in December.

A premiere at the end of 2022 at the New York Film Festival marked its official introduction to American audiences.

Recently nominated for 11 categories of the Goya Awards, the most prestigious in Spanish cinema, Simón's latest film stars non-professional actors Jordi Pujol Dolcet, Anna Otín, Xenia Roset, Albert Bosch, Ainet Jounou, Josep Abad, Montse Oró, Carles Cabós, Berta Pipó, Montse Oró, Isaac Rovira, Joel Rovira, Elena Folguera, Antonia Castells. The film is produced by María Zamora, Stefan Schmitz, Tono Folguera, Sergi Moreno, Giovanni Pompili.

A premiere in U.S. theaters.

Alcarràs will hit commercial theaters in the United States on Jan. 6. It will also be available on the MUBI streaming platform starting Feb. 24.
