On Tuesday, July 13, the nominees for the 73rd edition of the Emmy Awards, the most important awards of the small screen, were announced. Of the long list of artists, only five are of Latin American origin. In recent years, many award shows have been criticized for their lack of diversity, and 2021 has been no exception. 

Among the Latino noiminees for the Emmy Awards are Anthony Ramos, in the category of "Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries," for the adaptation of the musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The young actor will compete with his fellow series co-stars The renowned actress of Puerto Rican origin, Rosie Perez, has also been nominated in the category of "Best Supporting Actress" for the comedy The Flight Attendant.

Mj Rodriguez, an Afro-Latino actress of Puerto Rican descent, earned an Emmy nomination for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" for Pose, making her the first trans actress to be nominated for an Emmy.

"I'm grateful that people can really see my human existence and that they can see what I have to offer the world through art. I love what I do and representing every intersectionality of me being a trans artist who identifies as a woman and being Black and Latina," she said to Deadline.

For his part, Lin-Manuel Miranda, will also compete in the category of "Best Actor in a Miniseries" for the small screen adaptation of his musical Hamilton. It could be the second Emmy for the multi-faceted artist with Puerto Rican roots.

Finally, the actress of Argentine and Spanish origin, Anya Taylor-Joy, has been nominated for "Best Actress in a Miniseries" for The Queen's Gambit.

The Emmy Awards gala will be held on Sunday, September 19 in person from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, after a year in which the organization had to recreate the event virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
