As Shakira splits from Piqué, a look back at her relationships through her music
There is no official confirmation, but everything points to the Spanish footballer cheating on the Colombian icon.
Over the weekend, the breakup of the star couple formed by Colombian singer Shakira and Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué was confirmed. It was an expected end after endless rumors swirled about the poor health of the relationship. After 12 years — without marriage and two children — Shakira announced in a statement what many had already assumed. The split spread across Latin America, where many couldn't believe the news.
El Periódico de Catalunya had long speculated about the split because Piqué had been living alone for months in an apartment in the center of Barcelona. The FC Barcelona icon was also enjoying his time, constantly seen in nightclubs in the upper area of the city, accompanied by teammate Riqui Puig, and presumably in the company of women.
There is no official confirmation, but everything points to the veteran footballer cheating on the Colombian musical star.
"We ask for respect for privacy," Shakira said in a statement, and stressed the importance of her children not being harmed by the controversy.
During her career, Shakira has used her songs to hurl praises and criticism to her loved ones. It was rumored that on “Te felicito,” her last single featuring Rauw Alejandro, she sent several messages to Piqué.
"I congratulate you on how well you act, I have no doubt about that, with your role you continue," she sings in the chorus. That's followed by the line: "because you are a great liar and nobody can deny it."
But Shakira's love life playing a role in her music began long before Piqué. At just 17 years old, she wrote “Antología,” included on her debut album Pies descalzos. She had just broken up with her first boyfriend, Óscar Ulloa.
“You made me see the sky even deeper. Together with you I think I gained more than three kilos, with your many sweet kisses. But you forgot a final instruction, because I still don't know how to live without your love,” the Colombian wrote.

The song became one of her biggest hits. To the same ex-boyfriend she dedicated “¿Dónde estás corazón?,” a longing song when she left her native Barranquilla to move to Bogotá.
She then did the same regarding her relationship with the Puerto Rican actor and model Osvaldo Ríos in 1997, her most controversial boyfriend with whom she spent a year. She dedicated “Tú” to him, included on her album ¿Donde están los ladrones?
"It's you, love, my desire to laugh. The goodbye that I will not know how to say, because I will never be able to live without you,” Shakira wrote to Ríos, who wanted to “free her” because of her young age.
Then came her time with Antonio de la Rúa around 2000, the son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rúa. There were times of severe economic crisis in Argentina, and it did not sit well with the romances they boasted about. In 2006, she released “Día de enero.”
“I met you one day in January with the moon on my nose, and since I saw that you were sincere, I lost myself in your eyes,” she sang to him.
After saying goodbye to De la Rúa in “Lo que más” (released in 2010), it was Piqué's turn, who she met at the Rock in Rio festival in Madrid. After her "Waka waka" was the theme of the World Cup in South Africa his Spanish team won, she dedicated the song "Daré" to him, where she talks about the soccer player's blue eyes. Her final positive statement came in "Me enamoré" (released in 2017), where she was full of praise.
“I saw it alone and I launched myself. I fell in love. Look what a pretty thing, what a round mouth. I like that little beard, with you I would have 10 children, let's start with a couple," she anticipated.
In the end, they will only have two children, Sasha and Milan, who will now deal with the potential messy breakup of their parents.
