Everything should be ready in the backstage for the delivery of the most anticipated cinema awards of the year. The 90th edition of the Oscars will take place tonight (8 p.m, ET) at the Hollywood Dolby Theater in a ceremony that will be televised in more than 225 countries. Thousands of people will settle on the couch with a desire to gossip: What dress will my favorite actress wear? Will the tears of emotion run? Will the presenter make a mistake? Who is going to win the betting we have at the office?

In Spain, more than one will choose to stay up all night to follow the ceremony live and be the first ones to know about the winners. It will not be me, you are warned: my interest in cinema was buried in the most recondite confines of my being after my ex boyfriend, a film lover, left me, breaking my heart. (I should have seen it coming: on our first date he took me to see The Third Man, with Orson Welles, and I fell asleep).

Tonight, while I sleep peacefully in my bed in Barcelona, around 32.9 million in the US will follow the Oscars ceremony on television, according to figures from last year. I read in the media that the favorite nominations for best film are "The Shape of Water", by Guillermo del Toro, and the thriller "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", by Martini McDonagh. I have not seen either, but my non-movie-obsessed friends who have seen it, told me they are fine.

What is not "fine" is to find out that the 90th edition of the Academy Awards does not include any Latino actor nominated for the Oscars. The last Hispanic actors nominated were Demián Bichir for best actor and Bérénice Bejo for best supporting actress, in 2011, as I read in Forbes magazine. The first and only Latino to win an Oscar as a lead actor was José Ferrer, in his role as Cyrano de Bergerac, in 1950. Eleven years later, Rita Moreno won the best supporting actress for her role in West Side Story.

The absence of Latin actors nominated to the Oscars highlights the lack of opportunities and recognition of this minority in the film industry. One of the organizations that most struggles to change this situation is the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), which organizes its own "Impact Awards" to recognize the contribution of Latinos in the film industry, according to Forbes reports. In protest at the lack of Latinos in Hollywood, the NHMC has launched a social media campaign to pressure major film studios, such as Paramount, Sony Pictures or Disney, with hashtags: #OscarsSoWhite or #HireUSLatinos

The Oscars will be broadcast live on television from the Dolby Theater of Los Angles at 8 p.m. ET on the ABC network.
