During the first months of the year, Cartagena de Indias becomes the perfect setting for water sports lovers to come and practice their passions on its beaches.

The beaches of El Laguito and La Boquilla are filled with locals and tourists looking to learn or practice their skills in different disciplines. These are some of the sports that can be practiced on the beaches within the urban area of the city:

1. Kayaking

A relaxed alternative among the most popular water sports. It can be practiced by 1, 2 or 3 people. It does not require long hours of practice, but keep in mind that the kayak paddles will need strength and tactics to push the canoe.

2. Windsurfing

A sport that can also be practiced on the coasts. It consists of gliding on a board carrying a sail where you must have great control of the waves and the wind.

This sport can be practiced all year round, however, the best windy season in Cartagena is between the months of January, February, July, August and December.

3. Kitesurfing

It has a certain similarity with windsurfing. You don't have to be an expert to practice it, but it does require dexterity, strength, endurance and coordination to hold the kite carried by the body through a harness.

Kitesurfing is one of the most striking water sports in the city.

4. Surfing

This famous sport consists of staying in balance, sliding on a board, dragged by a wave, as long as possible and without falling into the water by directing it through one or more keels located at the back of the board.

Surfing is one of the most demanding water sports and also one of the most practiced in Cartagena.

5. Paratrike

Although to enjoy this experience you must pay for the time spent in the air, it is definitely an adventure to take your breath away and contemplate in a fascinating way the incredible scenery of Cartagena de Indias.

Paratrike consists of a paraglider with a motor that allows the sportsman to appreciate the city from the heights.

The potential for nautical activities in Cartagena is immense and there is still much to develop, because in 'La Fantástica' there are all the conditions to develop this type of sports and become a true national power.
