After more than six months of delays, the Senate’s Committee on the Judiciary has set a date for the nomination hearing for Judge Felipe Restrepo on June 10.

Sen. Pat Toomey, who had been accused by several media outlets and organizations of holding up the confirmation of the U.S. District Judge, waited until mid-May to submit his approval.

The vacancy Restrepo would be filling is one of many across the country that has been declared a judicial emergency due to an excessive backlog of court cases. According to the Pittsburgh Gazette, “since 2013 four empty Pennsylvania federal trial court seats have lacked nominees: three of 12 Western District active judgeships and one in the Eastern District. Pennsylvania labors under more openings than any state except Texas.”

After Restrepo has a hearing he will have to have a committee vote and then move on to a vote by the full Senate before he is seated on the federal appellate bench.
