The inaugural AL DÍA 40 Under Forty event will be a showcase of the most diverse and impactful young professionals in various fields of work across the Philadelphia region.

At the virtual event, taking place August 20, 2020, Jasmine Rivera, 33, will be one of the 40 honorees. She is the Civic Engagement Director of Pennsylvania Voice

As part of the lead-up to the event, AL DÍA asked each of the 40 honorees the same three questions and collected their responses.

Here are Jasmine Rivera’s responses:

What is the biggest challenge in your professional journey?

My professional career has been in the nonprofit sector and I want to share what many Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) colleagues have shared with me on this topic, and that is lack of investment in our leadership. That lack of investment is multi-faceted, it means we are underpaid while overworked, we are not given professional development opportunities, we are not mentored and/or we are the only BIPOC in spaces. These are the trends I’d like to see reversed.
What's your proudest achievement in your career?

I’ve had various positions over the years, but for most of my career I’ve been a community organizer. As a community organizer my proudest achievement is seeing the leadership development of my members. Their ability to run campaigns, advocate for their communities and the expertise of their political analysis. One of my proudest achievements that my members and I won together, in coalition with other organizations, has been Philadelphia’s ICE hold policy, commonly known as the sanctuary city policy.

Beyond corporate D&I efforts, what will make true inclusivity happen?

The way we will achieve true inclusivity is when BIPOC have full self-determination of their communities in every sector, which means having real decision-making power in every sector. And in order to achieve this that means those currently in positions of power will need to step aside or step down, while also consciously creating a plan that the next leader, or set of leadership, is not only BIPOC but also coming from the community that business, organization or political office serves.
