Five days.

That’s how long Philadelphia went without a homicide in 2018, according to a report from Stephanie Farr for Philly.com. The Jan. 6 murder of 27-year-old Ryan Wilson of West Oak Lane marks the first of the year, the report says.

The streak could mark the first time in more than a decade that Philly went five days without a reported homicide, according to Farr. She reported that in 2013 and 2014, the city had already experienced seven murders by Jan. 5. In 2017, the first homicides happened within the first hours of New Year’s Day.

Last year, Philly saw an increase in the number of homicides despite a decrease in violent crime overall. For the first time since 2012, the city experienced more than 300 homicides in 2017, accounting for an increase of about 15 percent from the prior year, according to a report from Chris Palmer for Philly.com. 

Palmer points to a few possible reasons for the 2017 uptick in the murder rate, including drug-related violence, inadequate police staffing and a widespread availability of illegal guns.
