Nearly 20,000 Milk Cartons Recalled from Supermarkets Due to Possible Contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a health alert after detecting irregularities in a batch of dairy products distributed across several retail chains. Specifically, nearly 20,000 cartons of Horizon Organic whole milk have been recalled due to possible premature spoilage of the product.

Details of the Recall

The recall involves 8-ounce cartons of Horizon Organic whole milk, both in individual packages and 12-unit packs. The affected products were distributed in Arizona, California, and Nevada. Consumers can identify the recalled products by the following UPC codes:

  • 12-unit packs: 3663207113
  • Individual cartons: 3663207127

The expiration dates for the recalled products are March 3, 4, 6, and 7, 2025.

Classification of the Recall

The FDA has classified this recall as Class II, meaning that consumption of the product may cause temporary or reversible adverse health effects, although the risk of severe consequences is low.

Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC, based in Broomfield, Colorado, initiated the voluntary recall on December 13, 2024, and the FDA issued its formal notice on January 17, 2025. While the company has not specified the exact reasons for the premature spoilage, it indicated that the issue could affect product quality during its shelf life.

Recommendations for Consumers

The FDA advises consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products to avoid consuming them and return them to the point of purchase. Although Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC has not issued specific instructions regarding refunds or replacements, retailers typically offer solutions for affected customers.

For example, CVS Pharmacy, one of the chains selling the product, has suggested customers return the recalled milk.

Impact on the Dairy Market

This recall adds to a series of similar incidents in the U.S. dairy industry in recent years, some involving contamination by bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. However, in this case, the FDA has not reported the presence of pathogens in the recalled milk, citing only the issue of premature spoilage.

Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about food product recalls and follow health authorities' recommendations to ensure their safety and well-being.
