A straitjacket for Mr. Trump

It’s a great feeling to know — and to remind everyone — that in about three months, the nation’s decent, sane and fair people will have the precious…

Yes, on November 6, the pterodactyl that occupies the White House can find his wings clipped by voters eager to return a modicum of sanity to the nation after two exhausting years of nonstop lying, unmitigated demagoguery and unbearable hypocrisy.

Yet, in order to rescue whatever is left of fundamental values such as honesty, compassion, justice, and equality before the law, people must turn out en masse to vote in the coming midterm elections. That is the only way to take Congress back from the shamelessly servile hands of the Republican Party, always willing to do its master’s bidding no matter the consequences.

The hypocrisy is brutal. A case in point is the administration’s hardening of relations with Cuba, announced by Trump in a Miami theater one year ago with great fanfare, and with the presence of the most reactionary and vile segment of the Miami Cuban-American community.

“We will not be silent in the face of communist oppression any longer,” Trump said with a straight face, taking a shot at the island’s human rights record in a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Also, he told the adoring crowd of Cuba haters that his goal was to deprive the Cuban armed forces of control over the economy and support the island’s emerging private sector. The U.S. will “take concrete steps to ensure that investments flow directly to the people, so they can open private businesses,” he said in Miami.

What the conman in chief did not explain was how shrinking the number of Americans traveling to Cuba by enacting confusing regulations and creating a climate of fear with the “sonic attacks” would benefit the island’s “cuentapropistas,” as Cubans call business owners. After all, and not surprisingly, the success of many of the new businesses directly depended on the increase of tourism to the island.

According to Cuban officials quoted by the Miami Herald, the number of Americans traveling to the island— not counting Cuban Americans — fell 56.6 percent during the first quarter of 2018 compared to last year. Business for the island's entrepreneurs is said to be down 30 to 40 percent because U.S. travel in general is down.

With friends like Trump who needs enemies?

Yet, in three months this administration’s hypocrisy, its demagoguery and cruelty can be, if not ended, at least contained.

At stake on November 6 are all the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate plus 39 governorships, and the bull in the china shop that now — let this sink in — holds practically total power over the nation is worried about the Democratic Party gaining control of the House and the Senate. This would be equivalent to restraining him with the straitjacket his despicable behavior is calling for until he is finally thrown out of office in 2020.

What a great feeling, right? But remember that the only way to make it real is by voting on November 6.
