[OP-ED] An Irish/Colombian: The Devil you know and the Devil you don’t know

It’s been about two months since I left a stable government job to have the opportunity to live out my dream.  The back and forth battle in my mind that kept me up at night was, “Will I be able to keep the lifestyle I already have?” “Can I still support my family?”

“Am I making a big mistake?”

This election season we all have witnessed the back and forth mudslinging between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. One day it’s deleted emails. The next day it’s about sexual harassment accusations. This election is its own reality TV series or a very bad Telenovela.

With all the talk of putting up a wall or having a fair tax system, the candidates are overlooking one major factor.  Trust.  How many Americans have said that they would vote for Trump because Hillary is “Crooked”? It is probably the same amount voting for Hillary because Trump has “no experience” in being Commander in Chief.

We are not truly voting for a top-notch candidate but we are more settling for a “lesser of two evils”.  Granted Mrs. Clinton has 30 years of experience behind her beginning as First lady to President Bill Clinton, then to the New York Senate, and finally as Secretary of State.

The thing is, with great power comes great responsibility.  That includes liability for the 2012 Benghazi attack and the ongoing Wikileaks scandal.

On the other side of the coin, it has been documented that Mr. Trump has had a history of failed ventures under the Trump name. His horrible comments concerning women and minorities has not made him much liked either.

These scandals have lead people to be a little bit confused on whom to ally themselves with. So what is a potential voter to do?  First and most important, we can’t take this election sitting down.

The fate of this country depends on our vote. Not only does our vote determine our future but also the futures of generations that are still yet to come.  It is not just about looking at the pros and cons of each candidate.

We all have to question ourselves “Where will the President take this country in the next four years?”  “Will my choice of President help me move forward in life or will my choice make me take a step backwards?”

Hopefully in the next presidential election, there will come a candidate who can start from nothing but who can stay humble and not fall under the political traps that have snatched past politicians.

Just like I came to a crossroads in my life of either settling for a job that I knew or reaching out into the great unknown, we as a nation have come to the fork in the road. We have to choose from the devil we know and the devil we don’t know.

I think back on the 2000 Presidential election where Al Gore might have had the popular vote, but lost the Electoral vote by five points to George W. Bush.

Let the phrase of the Spanish philosopher George Santayana be the catalyst for November 8th…”Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
