Like It or Not, No Apologies for the Truth

These are strange times and truth seems to hurt more than ever. If you call a spade a spade you are expected to apologize or be shred to pieces by critics,…

Truth, it seems, becomes more and more offensive every day, and not only for Donald Trump’s gang of mendacious, dishonest and manipulative minions but also –believe or not- for some journalists, my colleagues, who since the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Saturday, have exhibited a surprisingly sanctimonious streak.

It’s well known by now that Michelle Wolf’s controversial comedy routine at the annual event has been savagely vilified by Trump and his people, proving that Wolf’s no holds barred performance was right on target. Trump did not attend the dinner for the second year in a row, saddling Sarah Huckabee Sanders, his unpopular press secretary, with the thankless task of representing him in an event where some heavy roasting was expected to take place. And it did.

“Disgraceful,” is what Sean Spicer, the former White House press person, by now no more than a pitiful memory, called Wolf’s words. To what Wolf simply responded with a hearty “Thanks!”. Praises from Spicer or others like him would have meant her pointed comedy routine had missed its mark.

“Trump isn’t here, if you haven’t noticed. He’s not here,” she said. “And I know, I know, I would drag him here myself, but it turns out the president of the United States is the one p—- you’re not allowed to grab.”

But it was Wolf’s remarks about Sanders that raised a storm of criticism.

“I’m never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders,” Wolf said at one point. “Is it Sarah Sanders, Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Is it Cousin Huckabee? Is it Auntie Huckabee Sanders? Like, what’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women?”

This was a much milder commentary on Sanders than what she deserved. Ironically, she gets paid by us, taxpayers, to viciously lie to the American people. Perhaps because of a misunderstanding much of the outrage was caused by Wolf supposedly making fun of Sanders’ physical appearance.

“That @PressSec sat and absorbed intense criticism of her physical appearance, her job performance, and so forth, instead of walking out, on national television, was impressive,” tweeted New York Times reporter and former New York Daily News colleague, Maggie Haberman, who also skipped the dinner. She was one of several journalists critical of Wolf.

Yet Wolf never attacked Sander’s looks, but her despicable daily performance disrespecting journalists as a matter of routine, making a mockery of the Second Amendment and blindly serving the liar-in- chief.

As Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart wrote on Monday, “…until some of this righteous indignation and moral outrage at Wolf is directed at Trump for his inattention to the Flint water crisis and the devastation in Puerto Rico; his silence on the heroism of James Shaw Jr. and the demands for gun control; his disrespect for the rule of law and his inability to effectively govern without striking fear in the hearts of American families, folks need to shut up about Michelle Wolf.”

Yes, they do. It is beyond pathetic that an unapologetic and sharp comedy routine had caused such outrage when the president –the president, for goodness sake – shamelessly lies about rapist Mexicans and good Nazis, not to mention his mockery of a handicapped reporter and his bragging about how much he enjoys disrespecting women in the worst possible way.

The First Amendment is under siege by those called to protect it and these people are outraged about a comedy routine? Give me a break…
